Saying things like “But what he said was good” isn’t acceptable. Osho should not have any place at the same table. The two are not and must never be considered one in the same. There is a massive difference between being a man who has faults but harms no one except maybe himself (Watts) and being a man who purposely took advantage of others, hurt them, manipulated them, and robbed them (Osho). Osho.the guy who literally preyed on people physically, financially, and spiritually? There are far too many people in the comments who are defending him and it is highly discouraging.
And look into Tao Te Ching, also Eckhart's favorite book. To better understand what I'm saying have a look at another spiritual philosopher, the anti-guru J.Krishnamurti. That is why Eckhart says some of the most outwardly humble people can be one of the most self-centered/egoic people around!Īnd that is why I've realized if I name something in the name of virtue it is not longer virtue! Not the real kind at least.
I'm doing it right now but I'm aware of it because I talk from a place of comfort, the danger is too abstract for me not to say these words. The ego or the defence mechanism is ingenious, brilliant, millions of years of evolution! It can make you believe you are getting rid of the ego, whereas it just takes a lower position, it regroups. The way I see it if the intention comes from the center it is egoic/self-centered, if I want to meditate to escape from pain and suffering it is ego-driven is it not? "I'm running from daily ennui!" The ego is not a separate entity from us that is given. The ego is a tricky concept I agree with Alan wholeheartedly, but he can't just say the ego does not exist, he's being cocky. But that is simply laying in the tub and letting my mind create things for me to watch, learn, and take ideas from. To hold enlightenment is so far from true it is unreal. 2+2=4, I will never unknow that(assuming I stay healthy). When you know the answer/see through the game/have the aha moment. Your ideas of needing to continue to meditate and constant introspection isn't true. The quote is in the youtube video where Watts talks with Huxley's wife. Watts said that Krishnamurti would be his mentor. Please listen to Krishnamurti CAREFULLY, because Watts was much more in line with Krishnamurti than fake gurus who call themselves enlightened and trick people like you into some other thing to be attached to. You do not understand my point and are pretending you do. This is a WATTS subreddit, not a fake guru subreddit, so please go there if you want to post that, it simply does not fit here. Let us be very clear that I have 100% grasped this. With all due respect you have no idea what you are talking about and are not "enlightened". That is the state you are looking for, his enlightenment is man made and in his own image. He is literally a perfect case of what I said people can fall into this trap. He's made up his own definition of enlightenment and now is attached to that. Do not listen to this guy, he is lost and only confusing himself. These absolute truths can only be experienced when compared to relative truths of the day
The way you’re speaking in your comment seems like you are fixated on absolute truths and forget that the middle path is the ideal path for realization in our lifetimes.
It must be maintained through things like meditation and constant introspection of our actions in situations that are different every single day. The aha moment is but one small beginning of what can be called “enlightenment,” as the aha moment itself does not lead to everlasting peace of mind. Even if it could be described as an “aha moment,” that’s not even close to encompassing everything that it pertains to. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a state that people can attain.Īrguing about what is and isn’t enlightenment is missing the point. Sure, they couldn’t define it in words, but you even go on to say that words could never define it. Plenty of Buddhists go about their days working towards enlightenment without knowing the experience firsthand. The idea of enlightenment is not confusing everyone. No one is enlightened, enlightenment is man made and is just an aha moment. The idea of enlightenment is confusing everyone. Your comment is confusing and reads like that of someone who hasn’t fully grasped some of the concepts you’re talking about.
